Why springs break — and what happens next.
Garage door springs counterbalance the weight of the door, allowing it to open and close smoothly. The average spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles — roughly 7–10 years of normal use. When a spring breaks, the door becomes too heavy to lift and the opener can’t compensate.
Signs your spring is failing: the door feels unusually heavy, opens only a few inches then stops, or you hear a loud bang from the garage.
TYPES WE REPLACE
Torsion springs. Extension springs. Both.
Torsion Springs
Mounted above the door on a metal shaft. The most common type in modern homes. When they break, the door won’t budge. We replace single and double torsion setups and always recommend upgrading to high-cycle springs for extended lifespan.
Extension Springs
Run along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door. Older homes often use this system. We inspect both sides and replace in pairs — replacing only one creates uneven tension and accelerates wear on the new spring.

How long does a spring replacement take?
Most spring replacements take 1–2 hours from arrival to completion, including the full system inspection.
Can I still use my door with a broken spring?
No. Do not force it. Operating a door with a broken spring puts extreme stress on the opener and cables, and can cause further damage or injury.
How long will the new spring last?
Standard springs are rated for 10,000 cycles. We also offer high-cycle springs rated for 25,000+ cycles — ideal if you want maximum lifespan.
